“If it was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me.” Hummus, in its various iterations, has been around for thousands of years. Local to the Near & Middle East, it is one of the most commonly eaten foods in the world, along with rice. And it makes sense, since hummus is a divine food; truly a gift from God. No doubt I’m sure he wanted hummus instead of manna to fall down from the sky when he was feeding Moses and the Israelites in the desert, but he wanted to satisfy their sweet tooth. With that in mind, heavenly homemade hummus is the recipe you must memorize and perfect.
We love hummus here at NPE. We have a beet hummus recipe and most importantly, we have a Review of the Most Popular Store-Bought Hummus. That’s how seriously we take our hummus. Before we talk about our heavenly homemade hummus recipe, let’s talk about the reasons you should try to minimize your exposure to store-bought hummus.

Store-bought hummus’ main objective is to make money off your non-discerning taste without putting in quality ingredients. This is well-demonstrated by the fact that most replace olive oil with industrial-grade vegetable oil, like canola, corn, and sunflower. Click HERE to see why these oils are so destructive to your health or Listen to Holistic Health News episode on it.
Secondly, they throw in loads of preservatives. Why? To keep it “fresh.” That hummus can be on the fridge shelf of your grocery store for weeks. If you make our heavenly homemade hummus it gets rancid in several days. Why the difference? Ours doesn’t have preservatives. Preservatives, like potassium sorbate and sodium nitrate, are linked to cancer and hormone disruption.
Thirdly, with the growing popularity of hummus, manufacturers are coming with some crazy flavors. There is nothing wrong with jalapeno or even dark chocolate flavors, if YOU are making it at home since you can control the ingredients. But the store-bought ones are different. The makers throw in loads of sugars and fillers to change the taste. Again, best to make your hummus at home.

I highly recommend this tahini.
In a food processor, mix the tahini and lemon juice. Process for a minute. Use a spatula to scrape the sides and then blend for another 1/2 minute. Add the olive oil, garlic, cumin, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the tahini/juice mix. Process for 1/2 minute, scrape, and then process for another 1/2 minute. Drain the chickpeas. Add 1/2 of the chickpeas and process for a minute. Scrape the bowl before adding remaining chickpeas. Process until thick and smooth (about 1 1/2 minutes). Sprinkle tahini. Add your olives, beets, jalapenos, or whichever vegetables and herbs to augment this groundwork recipe.
