Election Day: Why Stress Over Something You Can’t Control?

by Gregory

I’ve never understood it. Why do people stress over things they can’t control? I don’t want to be cavalier about people’s anxiety since it is so pervasive in 2020 America, but part of me doesn’t understand it.

I bring this up since today is Election Day. We are arguably the most partisan and divided every in American history, or at least since the Civil War. On both sides, people are obsessing over the election results, spending hours and hours watching the TV with baited breath. The media companies love this since we, the people, are giving them ad revenue galore, but honestly, if you step back, what is the benefit of watching the elections results?

You are not affecting the results by watching it. You cannot will your candidate to victory by putting in more hours of viewing. All you are doing is increasing your anxiety and trepidation by watching the results. Why does it matter if South Dakota goes Republican or Vermont goes Democrat? All that ultimately matters is who is the winner, so why go through the vicissitudes of the agony of defeat and the mirage of winning en route to the ultimate results? It doesn’t make sense.

All one is doing is increasing your anxiety by watching the results. And Lord knows, we have enough of it with Covid lockdown, loss of jobs, restriction of freedoms and alike. So why stress yourself out over something you can’t control?

It is so easy for someone like myself to state something which seems so flippant. Many people are dosed up on Benzos and red wine and that is how they deal with the ongoing stress. But hear me out….

Flying

So many people get anxious about flying. How does it benefit you to be anxious about the plane crashing when you are stepping on the aircraft? Your stress isn’t going to make the plane safer or less safe. The plane crashing has only to do with the pilot, the maintenance crew, and aircraft control. You stressing over it in the back of the plane doesn’t change the results of the aforementioned working in concert to arrive you safely. So all you are doing is working yourself into a tizzy, putting your adrenals in fatigue, shooting up your blood pressure and pulse over SOMETHING YOU CAN’T CONTROL. So why do it!!!

Election

So, in closing, tonight turn off the election coverage. You will get the final results the following day or week. On this evening, take a walk, watch some relaxing or comical movie streaming, cook a nice meal and play with your pet. Don’t give the media companies any money, spare your autonomic nervous system and relax.

Get the results tomorrow.
