The 53 Most Common Code Names for MSGs, Sugar, and Trans Fats!

Writer, Gertrude Stein, once famously stated “A rose is a rose is a rose.”  Unfortunately in the world of processed foods we can’t be so certain that an “ingredient is an ingredient is an ingredient.”  With greater awareness concerning food toxins and additives and a greater outcry by the public to purge them from our food supply, “Big Food” has gotten clever.  Nabisco, Lays, and alike have created code words for some of the most addictive and lucrative additives so only the most educated and vigilant consumers would be aware of their existence.  In short, they want to deceive us.   They don’t want us to know how much extra garbage they put in our food.  Today we will cover code names for MSGs, sugar, and trans fats; three of the most prevalent and toxic ingredients on the planet.

(Please read our article on the Terrifying Three Toxins: MSGs, Aspartame, and Nitrates.)

Monosodium Glutamate (MSGs)

MSGs are salty, flavor enhancers that have been linked to obesity, high blood pressure, migraines, fatty liver disease, fibromyalgia, “brain fog” and much more.  MSGs are categorized as an excitotoxin, which means it overstimulates the neurons in our nervous system to the point of permanent damage to the neurons. It is most commonly seen in flavored food items, such as chips, canned foods, boxed rice/pasta, soups, and so much more.  It is astonishing the places you find MSGs.  (Click on the article above to see.)

Not to get too bogged down on food science, glutamic acid is isolated and coupled with a sodium molecule to make a white powdery substance that we call MSG.  In this transformation the acid is processed, heated, and hydrolyzed; as a result, certain toxic by-products are released in this process.  (Some of these by-products, such as heterocyclic amines, are cancer-causers.)  It seems that these by-products and the immune and nervous systems inability to handle them leads to MSG sensitivity (or as they used to call it Chinese Restaurant Syndrome).  Some people, similar to Electromagnetic Sensitivity seen in wifi, smart devices, and cell phone towers, have a predisposition to this sensitivity. If you noticed that you have some of the aforementioned symptoms and you tend to eat a lot of processed foods, read the labels.  You might have MSG sensitivity.

Here are some code words for MSGs. Those in purple are the most commonly used code words.

  • Glutamic Acid
  • Glutamate
  • Monopotassium Glutamate
  • Calcium Glutamate
  • Monoammonium Glutamate
  • Magnesium Glutamate
  • Yeast Nutrient
  • Autolyzed Yeast
  • Yeast Food
  • Sodium Caseinate
  • Hydrolyzed Protein
  • Hydrolyzed _____
  • Yeast Extract

Sugar

Refined sugar is added to a panoply of  processed foods to enhance sweetness.  In fact the average American consumes 66 lbs. of sugar a year.  A diet high in sugar has been connected to cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and so much more.  Much of the time we know we are consuming ample amount when we eat cakes, cookies, and alike and when we drink sodas.  (Read this article on toxic drinks found in your home.)  But more often than not, we are ignorant of the added sugars put in our foods.  The following code words for sugar may come from sugar beets, cane sugar, corn, or other grains (like the famous High-Fructose Corn Syrup).  Those in purple are the most common code words.

  • Anhydrose Dextrose
  • High-Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Corn Syrup
  • Corn Sweetener
  • Corn Syrup Solids
  • Maltodextrin
  • Maltose
  • (Crystal) Dextrose
  • Liquid Fructose
  • Malt Syrup
  • Maple Syrup
  • Molasses
  • Cane Crystals
  • Evaporated Cane Juice
  • Fructose Sweetener
  • Fruit Juice Concentrates
  • Carbitol
  • Concentrated Fruit Juice
  • Corn Sweetener
  • Diglycerides
  • Disaccharides
  • Fructooligosaccharieds (one of the items eliminated in the famous FODMAP diet)
  • Galactose
  • Glucitol
  • Glucoamine
  • Hexitol
  • Inversol
  • Isomalt
  • Malted Barley
  • Mannitol
  • Nectars
  • Raisin Syrup
  • Ribose Rice Syrup
  • Pentose
  • Rice Malt
  • Sorbitol
  • Zylose

And by no means is this list exhaustive!  {Read our article on sugar-laden superfoods.}

Transfats

Trans fats, caused by the refining and processing of vegetable oils, have been directly linked to atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and innumerable other maladies.  It is the universally-agree upon worst fat to ingest.    Most know that fried foods have trans fats but other common foods with trans fats are peanut butter, creamers, and pretty much every processed packaged SAD food.  The most insidious trick is that if a food item has less than 0.5 grams of trans fats they can label the products as trans fats free!! Here are the two most famous code words for trans fats.

  • Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
  • Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil

Please, go through your packaged cookies, donuts, candies, and other baked goods and you will be amazed how many boast Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil.  It ranks with Soy Lecithin and ________ vegetable oil as 3 of the most common additives found in the aisles.  And don’t be deceived with the amount.  The 0.5 grams of trans fats we accrue from each crap food we ingest over the course of decades adds up and leads to horrible consequences.

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.”

It is sad that we, Americans, are forced to decipher ingredient labels to uncover if/when food producers are deceiving us.   It is sad we live in a time when these same companies knowingly lace our food with toxic chemicals and addictive additives and then have the audacity to mask it.   We live in a sad and desperate time when it comes to our health.

Now that we have covered the code names for MSGs, sugar, and trans fats, let’s reflect a bit.  We are amazing people, but we are up against a clever, malevolent foe with millions of dollars of advertising, marketing, and food psychology at their disposal.  Brace yourself, people, and arm yourself with knowledge to not only combat the enemy but to tell others and protect your family from the machinations of Big Food.  Rise up!!

Thanks, Paul! It is sad that we have to be so vigilant, but Big Food cares more about profit for its stockholders than our health.
