Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). Along with acai berries, coconut oil pulling, and bulletproof coffee, it is quite a popular biohack in the holistic world. Recently, it has been catching on the masses. This is overall a very good thing. So let’s do a quick dos/don’ts of apple cider vinegar for the new initiates.
What are the alleged health benefits of ACV? The most well-known ones are:
- Helps regulate blood sugar (so great for all the diabetics).
- Cleans your liver.
- Helps maintain your weight.
- Curbs the appetite.
- It is commonly used as a great antimicrobial topical agent to clean wounds or skin problems.
Who doesn’t want these benefits?
How To Use
Most people dilute a tablespoon or two in water or another beverage. Some use it as a dressing for a salad. Some take a shot of it. I have always chose the latter because my rationale is “Why taint the taste of something else if you don’t have to?” ACV has a pretty horrific taste. My thinking is just to suck it up and take a shot of it in lieu of ruining the taste of something else.
Now the large majority of biohackers will tell you NOT to drink a shot of ACV. I can possible erode your tooth enamel and corrode the lining of your esophagus. It is acid after all. I would say that you should drink it the way you feel most comfortable.
Some studies show that you should drink your ACV at the very end of fasting to optimize the benefits. Also you don’t want to drink too much of it since it is very strong, especially undiluted. Maybe 2 tablespoons a day at most.
Not too surprisingly, the popularity of ACV has led to Big Food creating “drink concoctions” containing it. Most contain ACV, cinnamon, and honey. While these are a good introduction to ACV and may help dull the nasty taste of ACV, they have two major drawbacks:
- They contain unnecessary sugar.
- They break your fast given the sugar content.
For those reasons it is best to stick to the original.
That isn’t to say that both cinnamon and honey aren’t great for you. We have written extensively on the Health Benefits of Cinnamon and spoken about it on NPE Radio & Occult Health News. Click here to listen to Best Spices to Ingest.
To truly optimize the benefits of ACV make sure you purchase a brand that contains “The Mother.” The mother contains the fermented bacteria. Those that don’t have the mother are half the price. While those might be fine with which to clean, they are not the ideal one to ingest.
To demonstrate the importance of ACV, I would have my kids due the “ACV Grimace” test. For extra credit, they must come to the front of the class and take a shot of ACV. Those who can do it without so much of a slight grimace and/or change of facial expression get the points. It is funny to see the varied reactions. Some kids, raised on pickle juice, can drink it like water. Others grimace (like I do daily) and a very few must run out to drink water.
All levity aside, find a way to incorporate ACV into your life. Just use it judiciously and you will be doing your body a world of good.
