DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream

by Gregory

Some of us have a myopic view of essential oils. When we think of oils we think of diffusing it in the air, applying it on the skin, and/or maybe putting some drops into our bath. While all of these are certainly laudable, but it is a tad myopic given that oils may be used in so many ways. One way is in beauty and cosmetic products. Let’s talk about our DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream!

Why is it that we think oils are great to diffuse or apply on the skin or even ingest, but never think to use them on cosmetic and toiletries? It is perhaps the best way to use oils simply because if you DIY deodorants, shampoos, colognes, perfumes, soaps, laundry detergents and alike you are accomplishing two super important goals.

  1. You are avoiding the innumerable toxins found in these products. If you don’t believe me, you are at the wrong site, but listen to Holistic Health News (HHN), in particular our episode on Toxins in Laundry Detergents. And use the search feature above to read our articles on other toxins to which we are exposed often.
  2. You are saving loads of money. Colognes/Perfumes are around $70 a bottle, but even buying laundry detergent and deodorants can add up.

So we have these oils laying around the house to diffuse. Why not use them to make effective antimicrobial cleaners? Conventional household cleaners have loads of hormone disruptors and possible carcinogens in them. Deodorant has parabens and aluminum. Colognes and perfumes have parfume and fragrances. Shampoos have sodium lauryl sulfate, and the list goes on and one.

We have DIY Essential Oil recipes here at Naturopathic Earth. (Click on the ones below.) But let’s focus on particularly on this DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream.

DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream

This DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream is so simple. The main ingredient is one of the best carrier oils: coconut oil. The fats in coconut oil, like palmitic and lauric acids, are highly nurturing to the skin and the integumentary system in general. Think of oil pulling in the mouth but on a larger level, we know that coconut oil is great for the skin, teeth, and hair. Coconut oil also has the ancillary benefit of being a good antimicrobial agent. Baking soda is a phenomenal antimicrobial as well.

Let’s focus on the essential oils in this DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream. I chose lavender, tea tree, and a wildcard oil. Let’s focus on these individually. If you unaware of our podcast channel The Essential Oils & Herbal Apothecary, you need to start listening to it now. We discuss the usages and benefits of many oil. In our episode on tea tree oil, you would learn that it is the oil par excellence for treating and killing pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Other oils are competent in this realm, but tea tree is simply the best. So we must throw that oil into this DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream.

Aside from tea tree, given that this a a facial cream and will likely be used by a women, we throw in some “women oils.” What I mean by this are oils that women have traditionally had a predilection for given their tropical or feminine allure. In this recipe, I put in lavender. Lavender is one of the Top 3 oils given its all-purpose indications. In this case, it is a great antimicrobial agent as well as being super-relaxing.

Plus it smells great. After that it is your choice what other oil you toss into this DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream. I recommend below you use another feminine oil, like jasmine, geranium, rose, or ylang ylang. These smell great especially when combined with lavender and offer antimicrobial features.

The beauty of this DIY Essential Oil Facial Cream recipe is that it will save you loads of money. Just like DIY deodorants and certainly DIY essential oil colognes or perfumes, you will save tons of bucks. But start with this is easy recipe and move on to the others.
