1/3 Choose Depression, Alcoholism, Lose 10 Years of Life Than Be Fat?! In Obese Child #42, Gregory discusses a decade-old study revealing some quite disturbing, yet revelatory choices made in regards to obesity. Over 50% of Americans polled stated they would rather lose a year of his/her life than be obese. Even more disturbing 1 in 3 stated they would rather:
- Be an alcoholic
- Suffer from chronic depression
- Suffer from a bad divorce
- Have their arm removed
Than be obese. Most shockingly, 10% of Americans stated they would rather lose 10 years of their life or have an autistic child than be obese. Gregory mentions that 50% of the participants were regular weight, while 50% were obese.
At the end of the episode, Gregory gets very personal and discusses which choices he would make regarding be overweight or the other cataclysmic options. He also talks about how this study reinforces what most people know intrinsically.
A great compendium episode to this one is How Body Positive Movement Hurts People.
