Spirulina is the best kept secret of the high socioeconomic vegan world. Why? Because it is a phenomenal provider of plant-based protein. Well, in fact it is a microalgae, but to the vegans, it isn’t animal and that is all that matters. Spirulina has been popular with the tree-hugging health nuts since the 1970s but only as of late has it entered the zeitgeist. It might be due to Odwalla smoothies putting it in their beverages to give them that nice green hue.
Why Should I Embrace This Blue-Green Algae?
The main reason why one should begin sprinkling this radioactive-looking powder into your food & drinks is because one tablespoon of it yields 4 grams of protein. 4 grams! Other reasons why spirulina should be embraced:
- Loads of antioxidants to fight against free radical damage.
- A great plant-based source of Vitamin B12 (very important for health red blood cell production).
- High amount of probiotics (Read our article or listen to our pod about importance of probiotics.)
- High amount of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), linoleic, and arachidonic acids, all very important unsaturated fats and fatty acids.
- Great source of amino acids (in fact 60% of spirulina is comprised of amino acids).
What Does Spirulina Do For The Body?
- Strengthens your immune system
- Alleviates sneezing and congestion
- Lowers cholesterol and blood pressure
- Reduces muscle soreness
- Curbs the appetite
Studies show that spirulina as a mid-day snack is very effective for those struggling with hypoglycemia (and other forms of insulin issues) since its high protein levels help stabilize blood sugar levels.
The Taste Is Not Too Good
Spirulina does not boast a pleasant taste. That is why it is best used in smoothies, yogurt bowls, chia seed puddings, energy bars, or sprinkled lightly over other foods. Similar to chia seeds, it packs a big punch of macronutrients and micronutrients. For this reason try to find ways to implement this algae superfood into your diet…at least a couple of times a month. Especially if you are a vegetarian seeking non-animal protein sources. Or you can just take spirulina in pill form.

But Wait…There’s More!
Due to its high fat, high protein content, spirulina is used as DIY skin cream. It is reputed to reverse aging by toning and firming up skin. Use 2 parts spirulina and 1 part water to make a paste. Apply paste to face & body for 20 minutes, then rinse off.

So in pill form what would be the amount taken per day?
Hi Shapi! Thanks for posting comment. Around 2,000 mg/day. Most spiru comes in 500 mg pills. Try the actual powder so you can enjoy the “pleasant” taste. LOL
Spirulina is basically made by blue-green algae and the rich spirulina super spirulina in proteins, iron, calcium, antioxidants, B-vitamins and other nutrients creates a bigger pair in everyone’s diet. Spirulina helps in weight loss, fight against cancer, a strong immune system and many benefits.

Thanks. It’s great stuff. I’m not a big fan of the taste though. LOL
Spirulina is the best superfood available on earth. It contains more than 60% protein content. It is useful for all age categories. There are various spirulina products like organic spirulina capsules. People should use it according to their choice. Your post will motivate them to use it and improve their health.
Absolutely. Could not disagree with you. Spirulina is under utilized, sadly.
